Saint Thérèse of Lisieux described prayer as "a surge of the heart." Prayer is the breath of the soul — without it, our spiritual life suffocates. We are called not only to formal prayer but to a life of constant communion with God. "Pray without ceasing," Saint Paul urges. This does not mean endless words, but an ongoing orientation of the heart toward God.
